And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”
C. Twelve kinds of prayer (not an exhaustive list and not mutually exclusive)

1. PETITION
> Most common
> Jesus invitation: Luke 11:9 “… ask and it will be given unto you.”
> Neglected James 4:2 “…you do not have because you do not ask.”
2. THANKSGIVING
> Phil 4:6“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.”
3. WORSHIP
> “Exalt the LORD our God, And worship at His holy hill; For the LORD our God is holy.” Ps 99:9
> My working definition of prayer is “communication with God.”
4. CONFESSION
> David’s prayer in Psalm 51
> Step 10 “Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.”
5. CONVERSATION
> Talking with Him about our lives throughout the day
> Ask questions and listening for answers (Ex. 5:22-6:1)
6. CONTEMPLATIVE
> “Be still, and know that I am God….”
> Intimacy enjoying the presence: “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine” (S of S 6:3).
7. CORPORATE
> Promise in Matt. 18:18-20
> Examples in Acts 2, 4, and 12.
8. TONGUES
> 1 Cor. 14:15 “What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing
with the understanding
.”
> 1 Cor. 14:4 “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself….”
9. GROANINGS

10. INTERCESSION
> Praying for others (Petition is praying for oneself)
> Luke 11:5-8
11. COMMAND
> Sometimes we pray against the obstacles (Mark 11:23)
> Jesus commanded uncleans spirits to come out (Luke 4:35)
12. DECLARATIVE
> Last Sunday: Psalm 23
> When know heard (1 John 5:15) switch from petition to declaration

Conclusion: Venture out of your comfort zone and pray other “kinds of prayer” (Eph. 6:18)
